Reptiles (tortoise, gecko, bearded dragon, snake, chameleon…) are fascinating but demanding animals, with needs radically different from mammals. The key to their health is not so much "care" in the classic sense as mastering their environment: temperature, humidity, UV lighting, highly species-specific diet. Unlike a dog or cat, a reptile's health depends first on its terrarium. Reptiles are ectothermic: they depend on external temperature to regulate their metabolism. A correct thermal gradient, a heat source, suitable UVB lighting (essential for many species, particularly for vitamin D synthesis and bone health), and the right humidity level are vital. Diets vary enormously: some reptiles are herbivores (many land tortoises), others carnivores or insectivores (geckos, snakes). Giving an unsuitable diet is a major cause of illness. Supplementation (calcium, vitamins) is often necessary depending on the species. Here again, this is an area where a specialized vet's advice is valuable to avoid mistakes that prove costly in the long run.

Like many "prey" animals, reptiles hide their discomfort. A drop in appetite, a behavior change, shedding difficulties, unusual lethargy should alert you. Many reptile illnesses stem from unsuitable husbandry conditions and develop slowly. Careful monitoring and veterinary check-ups help spot them before they become serious.
