What is the essential care for a rabbit?

The pet rabbit is a fragile animal whose needs are often underestimated. The pillars of its health: a suitable diet (unlimited hay above all), a spacious and clean habitat, vaccination against specific viral diseases, and regular veterinary monitoring. Important point: the rabbit is not a rodent but a lagomorph, with a very particular biology. Not all vets are trained in its specifics — it is strongly advised to consult a specialized exotic (NAC) vet.

Should a rabbit be vaccinated?

Yes, this is an often-overlooked point. The rabbit can be vaccinated against two serious and often fatal viral diseases: myxomatosis and viral haemorrhagic disease (VHD/RHD). There is no treatment for these diseases; vaccination is the only means of protection. The precise vaccination schedule (starting age, booster frequency) should be set by your vet, ideally an exotic specialist, based on your rabbit and its environment.

Should you deworm a rabbit?

Unlike dogs and cats, systematic deworming is not the rule for rabbits. It is done case by case, according to the vet's assessment. This is a good example of why you shouldn't apply to rabbits the reflexes valid for domestic carnivores: their physiology is different, and only a professional familiar with exotic pets can determine what is relevant for them.

Diet, the key to a rabbit's health

A large part of a rabbit's health problems come from an unsuitable diet. Unlimited hay is essential: it wears down the teeth (which grow continuously) and ensures good transit. Suitable vegetables and a limited amount of quality pellets complete the ration. A diet too rich in pellets or treats is a frequent cause of digestive and dental problems. When in doubt, ask your exotic vet for advice.

Why track your rabbit's health with Petzo?

The rabbit naturally hides its signs of illness: careful monitoring is therefore valuable. Petzo helps you centralize its health record, note its vaccines and visits, track its weight (a key indicator in rabbits), and receive reminders so you don't miss any deadline. You can also share its record with your exotic vet via a QR code.

Frequently asked questions

What is the life expectancy of a pet rabbit?

A well-cared-for pet rabbit generally lives between 6 and 10 years, sometimes longer. Good diet, a suitable habitat and regular veterinary monitoring contribute to its longevity.

Why consult a specialized exotic vet for a rabbit?

The rabbit has a very specific and fragile biology. Not all vets are trained in its particularities. A specialized exotic vet can make the right diagnosis and adapt care, especially in a digestive emergency (where every hour counts).

Should you neuter your rabbit?

Neutering is often recommended, particularly in females to prevent certain health risks, and to ease cohabitation. It's a decision to make with your exotic vet.
