The ferret is a playful and endearing animal, but with very specific needs. The pillars of its health: a diet rich in animal protein (it is a strict carnivore), a suitable habitat with daily outings, vaccination, and regular veterinary monitoring. As with all exotic pets, it is strongly advised to consult a specialized exotic (NAC) vet, as not all practitioners are used to ferrets.

Yes, ferret vaccination is important. It is notably very susceptible to canine distemper, which is almost always fatal in ferrets, and against which vaccination is the only protection. Rabies vaccination may also be necessary, particularly for travel (with identification and European passport). The precise schedule (initial vaccination and boosters) is established by your vet, ideally an exotic specialist.

This is a major health point specific to ferrets. A female ferret left in prolonged heat without mating or intervention can develop severe, potentially fatal anemia. Managing reproduction (spaying or hormonal implant) is therefore a health matter, to be discussed without fail with a specialized exotic vet, who will guide you to the best solution for your animal.

The ferret is prone to certain specific diseases (notably endocrine and tumoral). Vigilance for signs such as hair loss, weight loss or lethargy is important, with consultation of an exotic vet when in doubt. Also note: the ferret can catch human flu. Careful monitoring of its general condition is valuable.
